Snake Draft Order: Every Pick Number, Round by Round

In a snake draft, the pick order reverses every round. The team that picks first in round 1 picks last in round 2, then first again in round 3, and so on — the order "snakes" back and forth. That single rule determines every pick number in your whole draft, no matter how many teams you have.

Here's the entire snake pick-order map for the four most common league sizes, a formula to extend it to any league, and what your "turn" actually means for strategy.

How the serpentine reversal works

For a league of T teams:

  • Round 1 picks in order 1 → T (slot 1 picks first, slot T picks last).
  • Round 2 reverses: T → 1 (slot T now picks first, slot 1 last).
  • Round 3 reverses again: 1 → T.
  • And so on, every round flips direction.

The same owner never loses their relative turn — the snake just guarantees that whoever picked last gets first crack the next round. That's the fairness mechanism: nobody is permanently stuck at the bottom of every round.

The snake pick-order formula (so you can extend it)

For league size T, round r, and pick-slot p (numbered 1 through T), your overall pick number is:

overall = (r − 1) × T + (r is odd ? p : T − p + 1)

Read it as: "the picks before this round shipped out ((r−1) × T), then add my position within this round — which is p if the round runs forward, or T − p + 1 if the round is reversed."

Worked example, 12 teams: if you're slot 4 in round 3 (r=3, odd), your overall pick = (3−1)×12 + 4 = 28. If you're slot 4 in round 4 (even), overall = (4−1)×12 + (12−4+1) = 36 + 9 = 45. You can verify both in the 12-team table below.

What "at the turn" means

The turn is where the round flips direction. The last owner in round 1 (slot T, overall pick T) is the same owner who picks first in round 2 (overall pick T + 1). So that owner gets two picks back-to-back — a rare chance to grab two players in a row with no one cutting between.

Look at the 12-team table: slot 12 owns overall picks 12 and 13. Slot 1, by contrast, owns picks 1 and 24 — bookends of consistency, but with a long gap in between.

That two-in-a-row burst repeats every two rounds for the corner slots, which is why the edges of the draft feel different from the middle.

What each slot type means strategically

These are general patterns, not guarantees — the right call always depends on your league's scoring, roster spots, and the actual board.

| Slot type | Where you sit | What it tends to mean | |---|---|---| | Early (slots 1–3) | Pick near the front of every odd round | An elite anchor early, but long waits between picks later in the round. Your second pick comes late in round 2. | | Middle (slots 4–9) | Solidly inside each round | Balanced-wait rhythm; you never wait the absolute longest, and never get a back-to-back burst. Predictable, steady. | | Late / at-the-turn (last slot) | Picks at the very end then the very start | The famous "turn": two picks in a row. You anchor late in round 1 but immediately double up in round 2 — a strong foundation, then a long wait into round 3. | | Near-turn (second-to-last slot) | One slot off the corner | Almost the turn, still benefits from the corner-adjacent swing. |

No slot is objectively "best" — it's about matching your plan. Early wants an elite anchor; at-the-turn wants to land two starters back-to-back; middle just wants to stay predictable. There's a deeper, honest debate on which draft position is actually best.

How to find your exact pick number

  1. Confirm your league size T (repeat it in every league — 10-team and 12-team snake tables look similar but shift by that factor).
  2. Confirm your slot p — your draft position (1 = first picker).
  3. Plug into the formula: overall = (r−1) × T + (r odd ? p : T−p+1) for whichever round r you're planning.
  4. Sanity-check against a table above. Spot-checking one round against a row is the fastest way to catch a mis-typed league size.
  5. Write down your real pick numbers for at least rounds 1–6 before draft night, then let the app track the rest live.
Quick check, 10 teams, slot 7: R1 = 7, R2 = 10−7+1 = 4 → overall 10+4 = 14, R3 = 20+7 = 27, R4 = 30+(10−7+1)=34… trend continues down the board each pair of rounds.
