IDP Draft Cheat Sheet: DL / LB / DB Roster Strategy
In an IDP league (individual defensive players), you draft real defenders instead of one team defense. That changes the draft completely: you're now evaluating 11–22 defensive starters on top of your offense, and which defenders are valuable depends almost entirely on your league's scoring system.
This cheat sheet maps the structure honestly — no invented 2026 player rankings. The names change every season; the reasons a position is valuable barely do.
How to read this cheat sheet
Two numbers drive most IDP decisions, and they're set by your commissioner, not by us:
- Scoring system — tackle-heavy vs. big-play/sack-heavy.
- How many IDP slots you start — and whether they're fixed (DL / LB / DB) or flexible (IDP flex).

The single biggest honesty point in IDP: defensive value is a function of your scoring system, and the systems are wildly different. Two tips:
- Tackle-heavy scoring (tackle = 1+ point, no big bonus for sacks) makes linebackers the most valuable defensive assets. Safeties who tackle well also climb. Steady production wins.
- Big-play / sack scoring (sack, forced fumble, INT, PD all worth multiples) makes elite pass-rushers and ball-hawking DBs spiky high-value assets. One huge Sunday can win you a week — and these guys get drafted earlier here.
The same defender can be a mid-round pick in one league and a total non-factor in another. Never carry a generic IDP ranking across leagues with different scoring. Rebuild the value list against your league's actual settings.

The number of IDP starters you run changes how deep you need to draft, not just how many names:

Rule of thumb: the more IDP slots you start, the earlier you must start filling defensive depth — a "late DL flier" in a shallow league becomes a "serious mid-draft slot" in a deep one.

The classic beginner mistake is either drafting zero defense until the last two rounds, or blowing every early pick on defenders. Both extremes ignore the actual math of your league. A workable mental frame:
- Offense still usually drives weekly upside in most formats — most leagues' scoring pyramids still reward offensive studs more. Don't let IDP hype convince you to reach for a defensive depth piece while a top-tier offensive starter is still on the board.
- But don't treat defense as an afterthought in deep-IDP leagues — running out of credible DL/DB starters mid-season is a real loss.
- A "two-to-one" balance heuristic (about two offensive picks per defensive pick in a standard roster) is a reasonable starting point — then let scoring and the board override it. It is not a rule, just a sane default at the start.
Balance, honestly: draft your offensive foundation first, sprinkle in defensive anchors as the tiers demand, and only go defense-heavy early when your scoring system genuinely rewards it.

IDP looks intimidating because there are more names and more volatility — but the strategy behind it is the same as offense: know your scoring, know your roster slots, and take the best available asset by tier. The defenders who score in your league's system are your value; generic "best defender" lists will mislead you.
The one change IDP demands is intentionality: commit to a defensive plan (how many at each group, which scoring rewards to chase) before the draft, not reactively during it.
