The Best 8-Team Fantasy Football Roster Structure
An 8-team league is the "everyone's stacked" format. With only eight owners drafting from the full NFL player pool, every single roster ends up loaded — which changes the whole draft philosophy. The scarce asset isn't "a starter" — it's elite depth and upside, because everyone around you has stars too.
This page gives you a common-sense starting structure (labeled honestly as one common approach, not the only one) and two example builds to compare.
A common baseline starting lineup
A widely used 8-team starting lineup looks like this — treat it as a typical default, not a mandate:
| Position | Starters | |---|---| | QB | 1 | | RB | 2 | | WR | 2 | | FLEX (RB/WR/TE) | 1 | | TE | 1 | | K | 1 | | DEF | 1 | | Total starters | 9 |
That's the classic 1/2/2/1/1/1/1 shape. The single most common variation is dropping or stretching the flex — some leagues run 2 flexes to deepen starting lineups further. Your league's commissioner sets the exact numbers; this is the baseline to reason from.

Set up your draft →Bench size: why 8-team benches run deeper
Smaller league = deeper player pool per owner = the waiver wire stays usable all season. That pushes 8-team owners to carry project-driven upside on the bench:
- Carry upside and handcuffs. With a deep wire, you can afford to stash lottery-ticket players and elite handcuffs rather than streaming every spot.
- A common bench is 5–7 spots. A typical 8-team roster is often 14–16 total (9 starters + 5–7 bench). It's not a rule — but deeper than that can leave too much talent unplayed, and shallower than that wastes the pool's depth.
The honest tradeoff: a deep bench rewards owners who study upside; a shallow bench rewards owners who want a livelier waiver wire. Pick what matches your league's taste.

Set up your draft →Example build A: "Balanced"
The flex-everything, no-positionever-feels-thin approach.
| Roster section | Example makeup | Why | |---|---|---| | QB | 1 starter + 1 bench QB | In 8-team, a second QB is cheap insurance; two startable QBs mean you never panic on a bye. | | RB | 2 starters + 3 bench | Elite RBs are the scarcest assets even when everyone's stacked; hoard depth. | | WR | 2 starters + 2 bench | Plenty of WRs available; you stream/matchups rather than hoard. | | TE | 1 + 1 bench | One anchor TE plus a flyer; most of the draw here is flexibility. | | K / DEF | 1 + 1 each | Bench one backup at each; stream the rest week to week. |
Best for: owners who want zero weak spots and hate navigating a thin position.

Set up your draft →Example build B: "Upside / flier-heavy"
The shoot-for-the-moon build that accepts risk for ceiling.
| Roster section | Example makeup | Why | |---|---|---| | QB | 1 starter (no bench QB) | Stream a second QB from the deep wire when needed; frees a roster spot. | | RB | 2 starters + 2 bench | Fewer stashes, but every bench RB is a high-upside breakout or handcuff. | | WR | 2 starters + 3 bench | Stockpile WR lottery tickets and handcuffs; one hitting wins you weeks. | | TE | 1 (no bench) | Stream TE weekly rather than holding a second. | | K / DEF | 1 each | Stream both; absolutely do not roster backups here. |
Best for: owners who trust the wire, love upside, and are comfortable rotating spots.

Set up your draft →Why 8-team scarcity shifts to RBs and upside
The honest quirk of 8-team leagues: because everyone has a stud-filled lineup already, the marginal win shifts.
- RBs are still the scarce asset. Elite running backs who command high volume are rare no matter the league size — a top-tier RB is worth reaching for even in an 8-team format.
- WRs are deep, so their value is matchups. Plenty of startable wideouts exist; you stream/rotate rather than hoard.
- The waiver wire is the real weapon. In 8-team, the wire is deep enough that winners are the owners who find the breakout first, not the owners who drafted the most starters. Bench upside and an active eye on the wire matter more than roster count.
Translation: in an 8-team league, "how many of each position do I draft" matters less than "who do I stash and grab off the wire." The structure matters, but the edge is in execution.

Set up your draft →FAQ
How many bench spots in an 8-team league?
A common, comfortable number is 5–7 bench spots (a 14–16 total roster). It keeps the roster deep enough to stash upside while leaving the wire shallow enough to be interesting. Exact size is your league's call.
Should I take two QBs in an 8-team league?
Optional, and it depends on the wire. With a deep 8-team wire, you can usually stream a bye-week QB rather than hold a second. A second QB is cheap insurance if you hate streaming; skipping it frees a bench slot for upside. Either is defensible.
Is TE-premium worth it in 8-team?
TE-premium (extra points for TEs) makes elite tight ends more valuable because everyone's rosters are already stacked and a big TE advantage is one of the few places you can pull ahead. In a standard 8-team scoring, TE is a position you can stream without much pain. So: if your league runs TE-premium, the elite TE jumps in value; if not, treat TE as a streaming slot.
